Self Care for Light Workers

by | Feb 25, 2021 | Sacred Self Care | 0 comments

Self care for light workers is absolutely necessary. Let’s not get too caught up on the meaning of a light worker here. For my use, a light worker is anyone who is an empath, healer, sensitive, spiritual, intuitive or seeking-self-growth being. WE are the ones who need the most self care because we literally absorb the energies around us in order to transmute them. If you are reading this, do not doubt that you are a light worker.

Current Energies

There is much tension, chaos, and fear in the collective right now. This energy is just hanging out in the air. So every time you leave your house (or go on social media), you are picking up this energy whether you’re aware of it or not. Unless you are taking preventative measures like practicing good energy hygiene and deep self care.

When a light worker is not practicing these self protective measures, it is like having a small piece of you taken away every day. This is where self care comes in.

Why Self care is not a luxury

self careI like to use the analogy of the water well. If you are the well and everyday you are giving your healing waters to people around you: children, husband, family, friends, clients, etc. This is fine for a period of time until your well runs dry. This may appear as illness, exhaustion, irritability, anxiety, feeling unfulfilled, resentment and plain old grumpiness.

But if you refill your well everyday, you have an endless supply of healing waters to share with whomever you please. By taking care of yourself, you are doing a better job at taking care of others.

Besides the part about being a better caretaker, there’s the part about connecting to your soul. Once you let go of the guilt of the notion of taking care of yourself, you begin to see the beauty of taking the time to get to know your soul deeply. Here’s where true inner work can begin and you can tap into source, meet your spirit team and discover your purpose. Self Care is where it starts!

How to do Sacred Self Care

Self care can be as simple or complicated as you like. For the sake of creating a self care plan that is manageable for light workers that may be new to it, we will keep it simple for now. You can always add onto your routine as you get more comfortable.

Create Sacred Spacecreating sacred space

This part is two-fold. You’ll want to create both sacred physical space as well as time space. To create your physical space, I like to find a quiet nook in my house. This can be a nightstand, a window ledge, a table or desk-somewhere where you can put a few special things.

Then collect items that are supportive for your self care. I currently have a candle, a few crystals, a spiritual book and a magazine, essential oils and a small vase of flowers. I change and alternate items in my self care space as often as I feel right about it. Your space should make you feel calm, welcome and happy as soon as you see it.

To create time for your self care, I encourage you to take a look at your daily routines and notice where you have pockets of time. I usually have a bit of time first thing in the morning and in the evening. Choose what works well for you and make a commitment to yourself to do it at the same time everyday.

2. Write a list of activities that fill your well

Grab a notebook or journal, a pen and set your timer for 5 minutes. Write as many things that you can think of that sound good to you. This should not be a list of should-do’s or maybe-do’s. Only activities that light you up inside. They can be things that you’ve never tried before but have always interested you. Or good old stand-by’s that you have been doing since you were a kid.

Here are a few ideas:

3. Explore Self care categories to deepen your practice

There are many different aspects to us as humans. Because of this, there should also be different aspects to our self care. I have a pretty extensive article about the 5 aspects of self care, so I won’t get into too much detail here (you can read that article here, if you like). The aspects are: mind, body, spirit, connection, and relaxation.

To truly fill every ounce of your well evenly, it is best if you can do self care in each category. For example, if the only thing you do for self care everyday is taking a bath, you are only filling one (ok two) categories. I’d say you’re filling your body and spirit well.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with this! Matter of fact, this is a great way to start and you are way ahead of the game if you are doing a self care activity that’s filling two categories! I’m just saying that later, when you are ready for more with your self care, you can start to look at the categories.
